Roberta Portela, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Oncology)
Dr. Portela was born in Brazil and obtained her veterinary degree from São Paulo State University in 2005. The following year she went to Guelph, Canada for a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Ontario Veterinary College. In 2008 she moved back to São Paulo, Brazil, to work as an oncologist at a local specialty clinic where she stayed for the following 2 years. While it was good to be home with the family, Dr. Portela’s dream of becoming a board-certified oncologist never faded and she decided to take a position at The Ohio State University as an oncology/clinical trials intern in 2010. In 2011 Dr. Portela was accepted into the oncology residency program at the University of Illinois, which was completed in 2014. Dr. Portela also obtained a Masters Degree from the University of Illinois in 2014, receiving an award for outstanding basic science poster at the Veterinary Cancer Society in 2013. In 2015, Dr. Portela received the Phi Zeta literary award for best Applied Clinical manuscript which was submitted to compete at the national level. In her spare time, Dr. Portela enjoys watching a good movie with her two cats or trying out new restaurants with friends.
